The history of our family traces back to Samuel Nelson Mcgee (here in refered to as Nelson) who was born in 1832. He married Maria Callahan who was born in 1843. They Married in 1863 and lived in Mississippi . They had seven children according to 1880 Census. Their names and ages as listed in that document were:
Robert McGee Age 16
Hugh McGee Age 14
Thomas McGee Age 12
George McGee Age 10
Trussey McGee Age 8
John McGee Age 5
Mary Marrett Age 4
The exact date that “The McGee’s” left Mississippi is unknown, but according to the census the family was living in Delta, Texas in 1900. Mary Marrett and Hugh McGee were not listed on the 1900 census with the family.
The year was approximately 1888, one hundred years ago, in a rural area of Mississippi in a place called Potsie Camp. Although the Civil War had ended, bigotry, hatred and animosity was strong and still running rampant.
According to one source of information that we have received, a dispute developed between two men when a white man kicked 'Hugh McGee's dog'; however, an other version is that the principal cause of the animosity between the two men was a white woman. Whatever the cause, Hugh McGee was reportedly viciously attacked by a white man with a knife, and Hugh later died of his wounds.
Hugh McGee left a wife, who's name we do not know, however we do know that the young couple did have a daughter who they named Josie, who became the ward of Nelson Truss after his death.
Nothing is known about Maria's Mother other than the fact that she was a black lady. Maria's Father was a white man, and it was Maria's Father that was responsible for getting his daughter and all of her children safely out of Mississippi.
As the saga goes, they left Mississippi by covered wagon and headed for Texas, and then later they moved to the Oklahoma territory.
The multiplying of the Clan may have had its roots in Mississippi, but it really began its
development in Texas, then to Oklahoma, and until this day has not ceased as of this writing.
