Hugh McGee, the second son of Nelson and Maria McGee, reportedly died a violent death at a young age the precise year is unknown, but is believed to have been 1888, which was little more than two decades after the end of the Civil War.
It is reported that it was Hugh's death, together with some events which preceded it that were the principle cause for the need of a quick mass exodus out of Mississippi of all members of the extended family which is now known as 'the McGees'.
The maternal grandfather of this extended family is said to have been their MOSES for it was he who made all of the necessary plans and arrangements, and then led their escape West in covered wagons
We are told that the exodus was a total success with all members of the entire immediate family making it to Texas .
Note: From reading the Samuel Nelson's (Father) affidavit Part 2, page 7, it appears the Josie Mcgee was the ward of Truss Mcgee in 1903 ..." by Truss Mcgee for himself, his four minor children, Charlie, Johnnie, Carrie Lee and Inez McGee and his minor ward, Jose MCgee. "
